I bought my last tube of Sensodyne after using it for over 20 years and have switched to Colgate brand for sensitive teeth. Why?

The recent purchase of Sensodyne Repair did not contain the ingredient of Potassium Nitrate which I did not discover until after having painful sensations while eating some types of food (those containing sugar and others) over the last week. I went to Target and discovered that none of the Sensodyne toothpaste contains this, except for ProEnamel and one other out of the 8 or so types of their brand.

GlaxoSmithKline has used the brand name to deceive customers. Instead it contains more fluoride which evidently does not prevent hypersensitivity as the claim written on tube.

Reason of review: Not as described/ advertised.

Monetary Loss: $4.

Preferred solution: Full refund.

Location: Indian Trail, North Carolina

About two years ago I almost died after using Sensodyne Pronamel. At first I didn't make the connection between the product and the symptoms.

I started to get noticeably weak, and I noticed I was experiencing shortness of breath. After a few days I could not even take in a full deep breath, and could barely get around. I went to see the doctor, and went into convulsions in his office, which had never happened in my life. I have always been very healthy.

He was totally puzzled.

Thank God it finally occurred to me that it might be the toothpaste, which I had started using five days earlier. I called the poison center and found out that it was the Potassium Nitrate in the toothpaste. They told me the potassium nitrate binds with the hemoglobin in the blood and keeps the blood from carrying oxygen. I was literally suffocating to death slowly.

Thank God I was able to stop it in time. Another two days and I would have been gone.

Look up other things that potassium nitrate is used to manufacture. You will be shocked.

Please, please avoid Potassium Nitrate in any product.

You are correct and Sensodyne is not the only brand that claims it is "sensitive" tootpaste buy only has increased the fluoride content. Thus, it is important that anyone purchasing these products for sensitive teeth read the label and if there is no potassium nitrate listed separately at a 5% level, then it will not be as effective.

Not sure why they are doing this, perhaps some wingnut is claiming potassium nitrate is bad for you, etc. Who knows?

Just check the ingredients listing if you need a sensitive toothpaste. Any brand with a 5% potassium nitrate will work and the house brands are just fine as long as they have this ingredient.
